Gippsland Water is reminding customers to include an alternate water source in their bushfire plan, as the fire season approaches.

Reticulated water systems are not designed to manage the pressure of bushfire events and could be damaged by fire and experience reduced or no pressure from firefighting efforts.

Alternate water sources could include water tanks, dams, swimming pools, wheelie bins or 200 litre drums. A special pump is also needed to draw water from an independent supply.

While leaving early is the safest option, those planning on defending their property during a bushfire should follow the advice of the CFA and be prepared for a range of scenarios.

If water or wastewater services are interrupted during an emergency, Gippsland Water will aim to notify customers in several ways including SMS, website and social media.

Customers can register their mobile number to receive emergency water and wastewater service updates at www.gippswater.com.au/update-your-details
