Boil water alert for Moe, Newborough, Yallourn North and surrounding towns lifted
Issued: 3:30pm, Friday 28 February 2020
Gippsland Water has confirmed that the boil water alert issued on 15 February 2020 for Hernes Oak, Moe, Moe South, Newborough, Trafalgar East, Westbury, Yallourn, Yallourn Heights and Yallourn North has been lifted.
Managing director Sarah Cumming said the Moe drinking water system had now returned to normal operation and the water from the plant is safe to drink.
“We’d like to sincerely thank our customers for their patience and understanding while we’ve been working to restore services back to normal.”
“We acknowledge the alert has caused concern and frustration for some people in affected communities and we’re sorry for the inconvenience.”
Ms Cumming said the boil water alert was issued after electronic control systems were impacted by a power surge during a storm on Friday 14 February.
“This event caused some water to pass through the water network which may not have been put through the usual full treatment process.”
“Since the alert was issued, our teams have been working tirelessly around the clock to remove the affected water from storages and pipe networks.
“We’ve also been running extensive water quality testing to provide absolute certainty our tap water is safe to drink.
“We recommend customers run their internal taps for a minimum of two minutes, to ensure all households have fully treated water coming through their taps.
“We’ll be honouring the promise we made to customers and donating $5,000 to a local community projects or event within the affected area.
“We spoke with our communities in 2016 and 2017 to get their input into our priorities including guaranteed service levels, and this promise is based on that feedback.
“We’ll be talking to the affected communities and seeking their input on how this donation might best be spent across the impacted area,” Ms Cumming concluded.
