Prepare your drinking water supply for emergencies
Gippsland Water is encouraging customers to prepare alternate drinking water supplies following recent extreme weather events across its service area.
Natural disasters and extreme weather events can disrupt drinking water supplies, damage infrastructure and result in temporary service interruptions.
Managing director Sarah Cumming said having a plan in place for your drinking water supply during emergencies is crucial.
“Extreme weather events and extended power outages can impact how we deliver water in many ways,” Ms Cumming said.
“They can potentially damage the infrastructure that delivers water to our homes or, in the case of extended power outages, impact the rate at which we can treat water.”
The organisation recommends storing drinking water in receptacles like water bottles or jugs.
Ms Cumming said storing an alternate drinking water supply was only a precaution and the organisation would aim to notify customers of any unplanned outages.
“If your water supply is interrupted, we’ll aim to contact you directly via text message if your current mobile number is registered with us. We’ll also provide information on our website and social media,” Ms Cumming said.
“Our priority will always be to restore services as soon as possible. No matter the time, night or day, our teams are ready and well equipped to respond to interruptions."
