Maffra water treatment plant is home to a new ultraviolet disinfection system.

An extra layer of protection has been added for Gippsland Water customers with the installation of an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system at Maffra water treatment plant.

The $970,000 system was turned on in mid-July and provides an additional layer of disinfection in the water treatment process.

UV disinfection is a powerful tool that works by using ultraviolet light to disrupt microorganism growth, function and reproduction.

The system is used alongside filtration and other treatments. UV treatment also has no impact on the taste of water.

The Maffra water treatment plant draws water from the Macalister River and services more than 8,000 people across Maffra and Stratford.
