Statement on Drouin wastewater plant operating license infringement

Gippsland Water has today paid a fine of $8,261 to the Environmental Protection Authority for breaching its Drouin wastewater plant operating license.

The infringement relates to low-level technical breaches in wastewater quality discharged from the Drouin wastewater treatment plant during higher than average rainfall events over the last two years.

During these events, Gippsland Water undertook extensive monitoring to ensure no harm was done to the environment.

Gippsland Water has been in regular contact with the EPA on this issue for a number of years, and continues to share information openly.

Gippsland Water is in the advanced stages of constructing a new $55 million wastewater treatment plant at Drouin to cater for current and future growth.

The EPA’s decision is further evidence that this investment is timely and necessary.
