Water restrictions lifted in Briagolong

Gippsland Water will lift stage two water restrictions for Briagolong customers from Tuesday 25 February.

Managing director Sarah Cumming said recent rainfall meant that the aquifer which supplies the town with drinking water had recharged sufficiently to lift the water restrictions.

“For the last month, our team has been checking the Wa De Lock aquifer level and it is clear that the inflows have been consistent enough for us to lift the restrictions,” Ms Cumming said.

Ms Cumming added that with the heavy rainfall stirring up water in the aquifer, customers may notice some slight temporary difference in the taste and smell of water.

“We can assure customers that Briagolong water meets all safe drinking standards.

“We thank customers for their efforts in reducing demand during the restriction period and encourage residents to still conserve water.”

With the lifting of restrictions, the township reverts to the permanent water saving rules.

“Permanent water saving rules are designed to conserve Victoria’s water generally, and will also reduce ongoing demand on the Wa De Lock aquifer,” Ms Cumming said.

These simple rules cover practices such as watering gardens, hosing hard surfaces, and using fountains. The rules do not apply to the use of tank water, recycled water or grey water – this water can be used freely.

Ms Cumming said Gippsland Water was now considering the need for long term actions to ensure the continuity of the town’s water supply.
