Water supplies in good shape for summer

Gippsland Water’s water supplies are in good shape heading into summer, despite the very dry conditions experienced throughout 2018 – that’s the upshot from the 2018 Gippsland Water Annual Water Outlook report, released today.

The report, which can be accessed from the Gippsland Water website, draws on current storage levels and water resource modelling to forecast supply security during the year ahead.

Managing Director Sarah Cumming said that the positive outlook was partly due to the resilience of the local water system.

“Over the last ten years, we’ve seen substantial investment take place right across the local water infrastructure network,” Ms Cumming said.

“This investment, together with reduced industrial demand, has enabled us to improve supply reliability for our customers”.

Highlights of the report include the news that key storage facility Moondarra Reservoir is full to the brim, so too is our share of Blue Rock.

“These two major facilities alone supply around 112 million litres of water each day to homes and businesses across the Latrobe Valley, and much more again to major industry,” Ms Cumming said.

Despite climate predictions indicating the current dry period will extend into next year, Gippsland Water customers can be confident that restrictions to water supplies will be unlikely over the coming summer season and into 2019.

“Based on the current outlook, we don’t expect to impose water restrictions this season,” Ms Cumming concluded.
