How we're acting on climate change

We’re moving to 100% renewable energy by 2025, and will reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

As our environment changes, so are we. Treating and pumping water to your home takes a lot of energy. We’re developing innovative ways to reduce our emissions, making our processes more energy efficient and offsetting the small amount of carbon we emit through planting trees.

There are three main ways we are going to reach our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2030

How we're going to get there

Technology

Through research and innovative use of technology we’ve made great progress to reducing our net zero carbon target.

To meet our 2025 goal of 100% renewable sources of energy, we’re continuously expanding our renewable energy generation activities. This includes installing solar panels, hydro generators and biogas combustion engines to power even more of our sites.

Offsetting

Removing and treating wastewater is energy intensive and naturally releases emissions such as nitrous oxide and methane. Offsetting is expected to be a long-term solution to carbon emissions from wastewater treatment, which are likely to always form a part of our operations.

We’ve planted more than 200,000 native plants at Dutson Downs near Sale and across other sites. These trees will remove 60,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere over the next 25 years.

Efficiency

Improving the efficiency of our systems and operations is a zero-cost way to reduce energy consumption and preserve water.

We'll continue to improve repair speed, leak management, and asset maintenance, and look for ways we can be more water and energy efficient.

We'll also educate our customers about the importance of efficient and effective water use. Helping our customers to conserve water in their home will preserve water and reduce our emissions.

Other things we're doing to get there

We'll also reach our goals by:

  • Moving to electric equipment and vehicle fleet
  • Collaborating with partners in higher education, water corporations and other environmental government bodies and agencies to innovate and stay ahead of the curve
  • Prioritising local solutions that support employment and economy. Local solutions reduce transport and support a circular economy. Developing close ties with our supply chain has positive impact on emission reductions.
